History and things to know

According to the official guide, in the time of Emperor Tenji the summit of Mount Kōjin was designated the place of purification for Ōmi Province, and it is said that every year many people climbed the mountain to worship at the Great Purification (Ōharae) on the last day of the sixth month. That Ōharae continues today as the Minazuki Festival, its annual grand festival, and at the foot of the mountain a yōhaiden (hall for worship from afar) has been built for those who cannot climb to the summit.
