History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it is said to have begun when En no Ozunu built a hermitage here in the time of Emperor Monmu, and in Engi 20 (920) it is said to have been rebuilt by Komatsu Minbu, governor of Awa, who enshrined Yakushi Nyorai. It burned down entirely in a fire in Ansei 1 (1854), and from inscriptions on the main hall's carvings it is thought to have been rebuilt the following year.
