History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began in the Tenpyō era when Gyōki Bosatsu, seeing a miraculous fire moving back and forth between the mountain and the sea, obtained a reliquary stupa of the nyoi hōju (wish-fulfilling jewel), built temple halls and named it Hōjusan Nyoi-ji. In the late Kamakura period it received the devotion of Emperor Fushimi and was granted an imperial plaque, and after the war fires of the Ōei era it was restored many times.
