History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, Prince Maroko was born in the 8th year of Emperor Buretsu (506) at 磨留古乎加 (the hill of present-day Maruoka Castle), and the shrine was founded when his placenta was buried there and made a Shinmei shrine. The prince, who carried out flood control and land reclamation on the Sakai Plain, was revered as a guardian kami of land development, and with the building of Maruoka Castle in Tenshō 4 (1576) the shrine was moved to its present site. It lost its buildings in the Fukui Earthquake of Shōwa 23 and was rebuilt in Shōwa 37 (1962).
