History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began in Kōchō 2 (1262) when 朝海法印, a shugen priest and disciple of Kenjin of Hōon-in at Daigo-ji, built a small hall at the eastern foot of Ōhirasan and performed prayers. In the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, when Minagawa Hiroteru built Tochigi Castle and its castle town, it moved to its present site. The present main hall was newly built in the Heisei era as a project marking 750 years since the temple's founding.
