History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened in Taika 2 by the Indian monk Hōdō Sennin at the imperial request of Emperor Kōtoku, and it is said to have come to be called Tōri Tenjō-ji after Kōbō Daishi brought back an image of Lady Maya from Tang China and enshrined it here. In the Edo period Tokugawa Iemitsu designated it the guardian temple of Settsu. It lost its buildings in a fire in Shōwa 51, and the golden hall, the Maya Bunin hall and other buildings have been rebuilt at Moto-Maya, regarded as the site of its founding.
