History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, its predecessor is said to be Myōju-ji, a Zen temple that Mōri Terumoto built as a place for his birth mother's memorial tablet when he moved his castle to Hiroshima in Tenshō 17 (1589). After the Battle of Sekigahara, Fukushima Masanori changed it to the Shingon school, and in the time of the Asano family it was designated as a prayer hall protecting the castle's kimon (demon gate). Wooden images of the Akō rōshi, which escaped the atomic bombing, are installed in the main hall.
