History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it is said to have begun in Daidō 1 (806) when Sakanoue no Tamuramaro built its halls and pagoda and installed three images carved from a yuzuri tree: Yakushi Nyorai, Gōzanze Myōō and Jinja Taishō. The present main hall was rebuilt in Shōka 2 (1258) and the three-storied pagoda in Bun'ei 7 (1270), and both are designated National Treasures.
