History and things to know

According to the official guide, it was opened in Genroku 3 (1690) with Ichinyo Shōnin, the 16th head of Higashi Hongan-ji, as founder, and was built on the site of Furuwatari Castle, which Tokugawa Mitsutomo, lord of the Owari domain, donated. It lost most of its buildings in the air raids on Nagoya in Shōwa 20, and the present main hall was rebuilt in Shōwa 37 through the efforts of its followers.
