History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it was first founded in the reign of Emperor Suinin to enshrine the ancestors who opened up this land, and it is an ancient shrine listed in the Jinmyōchō of the Engishiki as 長寸神社. It is said that in Anna 2 (969) the divine spirit of Kuni no Satsuchi no Mikoto was brought from Kinpusen and placed to the west, and the West Main Sanctuary was built, and that in Kannin 1 (1017), because pine seedlings were presented to the imperial court, the shrine received the title Namura from Emperor Go-Ichijō. The West Main Sanctuary, rebuilt in Tokuji 3 (1308), is a National Treasure, and the East Main Sanctuary is an Important Cultural Property.
