History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was opened in Keiun 1 (704) by 真応 Shōnin by imperial request of Emperor Monmu, and it was originally a place of mountain ascetic practice (shugen). A story is told of Kannon taking the place of a monk shut in by snow and saving him, and the name Nariai-ji is said to have been given as a temple where wishes come to be fulfilled (nariau).
