History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it began when, in the time of Emperor Nintoku, Narawake no Mikoto, kuni no miyatsuko of Shimotsuke Province, buried a golden jewel, built a mound and erected a small shrine, and it is said that in the Enryaku era Sakanoue no Tamuramaro invited the Hachiman kami of Usa and made it a Hachiman shrine. It is said that Nasu no Yoichi prayed here for victory in the Genpei War and built its buildings in Bunji 3 (1187); afterwards it was revered as the clan shrine of the Nasu clan and later of the Ōzeki clan, lords of the Kurobane domain. The main sanctuary and two-story gate were built in the Kan'ei era.
