History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began in Yōrō 1 (717), when Taichō opened Iwaya-dera in this place. It is said that in the Heian period Cloistered Emperor Kazan renamed it Nata-dera, taking one character each from Nachisan and Tanigumisan. After it declined through war, Maeda Toshitsune put in order the main hall, the three-story pagoda and other buildings in the Kan'ei era, and these formed the basis of its present appearance.
