History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it began when Gyōki carved a statue of Jūichimen Kannon and enshrined it here in the Tenpyō Shōhō era. It lost its halls in the fires of war in Eiroku 8 (1565), but the principal image survived, and in Genna 2 (1616) 青厳 Oshō revived the temple. Since around the Genroku era it has been crowded with people on the “Nozaki-mairi” pilgrimage.
