History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, the year it was invited here is unknown, but it has long been worshipped as the "Yu no Kami." In autumn Enpō 7 (1679), its buildings were restored by order of Matsudaira Tadafusa, lord of the Shimabara domain, and it was called "Obama Daimyōjin." At the same time 劔柄神社 was also built; in autumn Heisei 7 the two shrines merged and were enshrined together as Obama Jinja in a new building erected on the site of 劔柄神社.
