History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, it began in Kyūju 1 (1154) when Taira no Kiyomori, feeling that his escape from a violent thunderstorm on the peak 明星峰 was owed to Michizane's protection, built a shrine on the peak. In Kan'ei 17 (1640) the kami was enshrined separately in Onaga village at the foot of the mountain and called Onaga Tenjingū, and in Meiji 5 it took its present name.
