History and things to know
According to the official guide, Daisen is recorded as "Ōkami no Take" in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki of the Nara period, and it is said to have been an object of faith even before that. In the era of kami-buddha syncretism, the enshrined kami was identified with Jizō Bosatsu and called Daichimyō Gongen, and the main shrine began as a winter shrine (fuyumiya) built at the foot of the mountain, since serving at the inner shrine in winter was difficult. The inner shrine's building, constructed in Bunka 2 (1805), is one of the largest gongen-zukuri buildings in Japan and a nationally Important Cultural Property.
