History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, to hold memorial services for those who worked and died in the silver mine, 月海浄印 vowed to create the Five Hundred Arhats, and with many donations they were completed in Meiwa 3 (1766). Two years earlier, in Meiwa 1 (1764), Rakan-ji was built as a temple to protect the arhats. The Five Hundred Arhats are part of the component properties of the World Heritage site Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine.
