History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it began when the daimyō Sugihara family built it in Fushimi, Kyoto, as their family temple in the Eiroku era; following Ieyasu's entry into Edo, it moved to Kanda and then to Hatchōbori. In Kan'ei 12 (1635) it moved to Mita, and the main hall rebuilt after a great fire in the late Edo period escaped war damage and remained until a new hall was built in 2005.
