History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it began in Enryaku 15 when Kōbō Daishi built a hall here and made a Yakushi Nyorai he had carved himself its principal image. Later, after the sacred site had fallen into ruin, the priest 宜公 rebuilt it in Kanbun 5, naming it Hachimansan Rin'yō-ji, and it became a Sōtō temple. The main hall collapsed in the Nōbi Earthquake and was rebuilt in Taishō 9.
