History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it began when Ono no Tomihito perceived Yakushi Nyorai on Mount Tomi and built a bathhouse of medicinal herbs; in the Tenpyō era Gyōki built a great hall by order of Emperor Shōmu, and Bodaisenna, who had come to Japan, is said to have named it Ryōsen-ji because the lie of the land resembled Ryōjusen. In Kōan 6 (1283) the main hall was rebuilt.
