History and things to know

According to the official guide, the temple was opened in Tenbun 3 (1534) by 芳室祖春. It was originally a Tendai temple and is said to have converted to the Sōtō-shū while keeping its principal image of Amida Nyorai. The Kaisandō was begun by the 23rd abbot, 蟠谷大龍, in Kaei 5 (1852) and completed in Ansei 4 (1857).
