History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is said to have been opened by the high priest Gien in the Taihō era (701–703); it was at first called Taihō-in and served as the bettō temple of Tamura Jinja, the Ichinomiya of Sanuki, and later Gyōki repaired its halls and pagoda and renamed it Ichinomiya-ji. In the Daidō era (806–810) Kōbō Daishi carved Shō Kannon Bosatsu as the principal image and converted it to the Shingon school. After being burned in war it was rebuilt by Yūsei Daitoku, and in the Edo period it was relieved of its role as bettō by the lord of the Takamatsu domain.
