History and things to know
According to the official guide, it is one of the provincial temples (kokubunji) built throughout the country at the imperial request of Emperor Shōmu; though it declined with the collapse of the ritsuryō system, it was revived in the Kamakura period, and from the medieval period onward it has carried on the light of the Dharma as a temple of the Shikoku pilgrimage. Because foundation stones from the time of its founding remain, the entire precinct is designated a national Special Historic Site, and the main hall, built in the mid-Kamakura period, and the temple bell, thought to have been cast in the Nara period, are Important Cultural Properties.
