History and things to know

According to the official guide, there is a legend that Sukunahikona no Kami crossed the sea in a boat made from a bean pod and came to the village of Sasaki, and it is regarded as an ancient shrine whose name is listed in the Engishiki. From the Kamakura period onward Emperor Uda and Prince Atsuzane were also enshrined, and it became the clan kami of the Sasaki family. The present main sanctuary, gonden and worship hall were rebuilt by the Kyōgoku family of the Marugame domain after a fire at the end of the Edo period.
