History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was opened in Shōkei 2 (1333) with Ashikaga Takauji as its patron founder (kaiki) and Musō Soseki welcomed as its founding priest (kaisan). Ink inscriptions on the bracketing show that the Buddha hall was built in Ōei 22 (1415), and it survived a fire in Tenna 2 (1682). Its buildings are lined up in a straight line from the main gate to the main hall, a layout typical of Zen temples.
