History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it began in Manju 4 (1027), when Fujiwara no Shōshi urged her father Michinaga to build it beside the Tōhoku-in of Hōjō-ji, and Izumi Shikibu is said to have become its first head priest. In the Kamakura period it moved to the south of Seigan-ji, and in the Tenshō era it moved to its present site by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After burning in a fire in the Meiji era, the present main hall was built in Taishō 8 (1919).
