History and things to know
According to the temple's tradition, it is said to have been founded by Kōbō Daishi in Daidō 1 (806) and later restored by Tada no Mitsunaka. A legend remains that a jewel on top of the huge rock “Tama no Iwa” in the grounds lit up the sea every night. The main hall, built in the stage (butai) style, was built in Jōkyō 3 (1686).
