History and things to know
According to the official guide, although its founding is not clear, there were originally three shrines (Uwatsu-gū, Nakatsu-gū and Okitsu-gū) side by side at Katsuma in the north of the island, and it is said that around the 2nd to 4th centuries only Uwatsu-gū was moved to the present site. It is said to have been worshipped for generations by the Azumi clan, who regard the three Watatsumi kami as their ancestors; in Daidō 1 (806) sustenance households were donated to it, and in Jōgan 1 (859) it received the divine rank of Junior Fifth Rank Upper.
