History and things to know

According to the temple's chronology, in Eikan 2 (984) Kaisan moved the Amida Nyorai statue of the Jōgyōdō of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei to the detached palace of Higashi Sanjō-in on Kaguraoka, and in Shōryaku 3 (992) it received an imperial edict of founding and its halls were completed. During the Ōnin War the principal image was moved to various places, but in Bunmei 16 (1484) it returned to the original site by order of Ashikaga Yoshimasa.
