History and things to know
According to the temple's guide, it is said to have been opened about 1,200 years ago by Kōbō Daishi and Chishō Daishi. When Emperor Sutoku, who had moved to Sanuki after the Hōgen Disturbance, died, he was cremated here in accordance with his will and his imperial tomb was built, and the Tonshōji-den was built as a mausoleum to pray for his repose.
