History and things to know
According to the temple's guide, it began as a place of practice opened by Ennin in the imperial palace in Jōgan 2 (860) at the wish of Emperor Seiwa. Later Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa granted this temple to Hōnen Shōnin, and it became a nenbutsu practice hall of the Jōdo sect. In the Tenshō era it moved to its present site in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's reorganization of the city.
