History and things to know

According to the temple's account of its origins, Tani Shōan, a wealthy Sakai merchant devoted to Takuan, built the temple from Kan'ei 2 to 5 (1625–1628) on the site of Kaie-ji, which had burned in the Summer Siege of Osaka, to pray for the repose of his child, who had died young. Its buildings were lost in air raids during the Second World War and it was revived after the war; the present hōjō was built in Shōwa 27.
