History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is said to be an imperial prayer temple of Empress Shōtoku, opened in 768 by Wake no Kiyomaro, who was guided by a sacred dream. It is said that because the young Kūkai visited before and after his journey to Tang China and prayed to the principal image, the name Futatabisan (futatabi, "again") came about. In Tenju 1 (1375) Zenmyō Shōnin is said to have prayed for Emperor Go-En'yū's recovery from illness.
