History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, Prince Toneri, praying for his mother Empress Jitō to recover from an eye disease, received a golden pot from Shirahige Myōjin, who appeared in a dream, and when he washed his mother's eyes with water from a sacred well she was cured. In gratitude, the temple is said to have been built in Jitō 8 (693) by the prince's command. It is said that it was named 鍋蔵山 because the golden pot was buried in its foundations, and Tōmyō-ji because the east appeared bright.
