History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it began when shrine buildings were built in the Genkyū era (1204–1206) in accordance with the last wishes of Ayame no Mae, wife of Minamoto no Yorimasa, and it was once called Shiinoki Hachimangū. In Meiji 1 it was renamed Tsuruhane Hachimangū after the shape of the mountain behind it, and in Meiji 5 it took its present name. The shrine buildings collapsed in the atomic bombing, but they were rebuilt soon after the war.
