History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is said to have been founded in Kan'ei 15 (1638), at the beginning of the Edo period. The official guide relates that it was built as a place for showing the principal image of Jōgū-ji in Mikawa, its parent temple, in response to people's wish to venerate it in Edo as well. The principal image, a statue of Amida Nyorai, is said to date from the Kamakura period and is a cultural property of Shinjuku Ward.
