History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, before his fight with Yamata no Orochi, Susanoo no Mikoto built an eightfold fence (yaegaki) around a great cedar in the Sakusame forest and hid Inadahime no Mikoto there. It is said that after defeating the serpent, the two became husband and wife in this place and built a palace, and that it came to be called the Yaegaki palace after the song "Yakumo tatsu", which he composed in joy at taking his wife.
