History and things to know
According to the temple's guide, it began in Kōchō 1 (1261) when Sainen, a disciple of Shinran, opened Saikō-in at 木売川戸, and this is regarded as the present Shōjō-ji. The statue is called "Omuku-sama" from the tradition that a statue of Shinran Shōnin, buried in front of the gate during a time of war, was later dug up, and the pond left at that spot still remains in front of the gate.
