History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was founded in Chōgen 2 (1029) by the priest Gensan, who enshrined a Senju Kannon he had carved himself as the principal image. In Chōkyū 3 (1042), by order of Emperor Go-Suzaku, the Senju Kannon of Washio-dera in eastern Kyoto was moved here and became the principal image; after many of its lodgings were lost in the Ōnin War, the Kannon hall and other buildings are said to have been restored in the Edo period with donations from Keishōin.
