History and things to know

According to the temple's guide, around Keichō 4 (1599) there was a hermitage enshrining Amida Nyorai here, and in Kyōhō 9 (1724) the priest 皇益蜜山 formally opened the temple. In the late Edo period it lost its main hall in two fires and in the great earthquake of Ansei 1, but the head priest and villagers rebuilt it by collecting donations from travelers on the Tōkaidō.
