Fuji Gongen is the name of a faith that looks up to Mount Fuji as a sacred mountain. Shōhōin also calls it Sengen Daimyōjin and gives its honjibutsu as Dainichi Nyorai. A cultural property commentary of Shizuoka Prefecture also introduces the history of worshipping Sengen Ōkami and Sengen Daibosatsu, together with the honjibutsu Dainichi Nyorai, at the summit.

This introduction is based on materials from Shōhōin (Tobi Fudō). It is summarized within the scope of the beliefs and traditions those materials convey, and does not present explanations or customs common to all schools, shrines, and temples.

Circling the summit as a mandala

The peaks surrounding the crater of Mount Fuji were likened to a mandala representing the world of the buddhas, and pilgrimages around them called "Hachiyō Meguri" and "Ohachi Meguri" were made. Shugen practitioners gathered at Murayama at the foot of the mountain, and a sacred site of kami-buddha syncretism flourished. Even today, traces of that history are handed down at the Dainichidō and at Sengen Jinja.
