About this English rendering

This site’s English rendering of the Japanese meaning guide, aligned with this edition. It is separate from the source words for recitation and is not an official liturgy. Sacred sounds are explained where possible, not given speculative literal translations. Historical beliefs, royal authority, illness and protection claims belong to the text; they are not present-day judgments, medical advice or guarantees of results.

Section 1

I, the Buddha Rocana, now sit upon the lotus seat. Upon the thousand petals surrounding it,

I manifest a thousand further Shakyamunis. Each petal holds ten billion lands, and each land has one Shakyamuni.

Each sits beneath the awakening tree and simultaneously accomplishes the Buddha’s way. These innumerable Shakyamunis

have Rocana as their original body. Each Shakyamuni, accompanied by people as numerous as dust,

comes together before me to hear me recite the Buddha’s precepts. Then the gateway of nectar—the precious teaching—opens.

At that time these Shakyamunis return to their original places of practice, each sitting beneath the awakening tree,

and recite the precepts of me, their fundamental teacher: the ten grave and forty-eight lesser precepts. The precepts are like the bright sun and moon,

and like jewels in an ornament. Through them, bodhisattvas as numerous as dust accomplish true awakening.

This is what Rocana recites, and I too recite it thus. You newly learning bodhisattvas,

receive and uphold the precepts reverently. Having received them, transmit them to living beings.

Listen well as I recite correctly the pratimoksha, the treasury of precepts within the Buddha’s teaching.

Everyone, trust wholeheartedly: you are those who will become Buddhas; I am one who has already become a Buddha.

If you always trust in this way, the precepts are already present. All who possess a heart

should receive the Buddha’s precepts. When living beings receive them, they enter directly into the rank of the Buddhas.

Their rank becomes equal to great awakening, and they are truly the Buddhas’ children. Everyone, show reverence,

and listen wholeheartedly to my recitation.

Section 2

The Brahma Net Bodhisattva Precept Sutra says: all who possess a heart should receive the Buddha’s precepts.

When living beings receive them, they enter directly into the rank of the Buddhas.

Their rank becomes equal to great awakening, and they are truly the Buddhas’ children.

Source text and reading aid

Roman letters are provided for every line of this source text.

How to use the Roman letters

Roman letters follow the kana displayed in this site’s Japanese reader; some readings are editorial additions documented on the Japanese page. These are a reading aid, not restored Sanskrit or a recording of a temple’s chanting. Historical spellings (such as wo, wi, we and ha used as a particle) are kept. Double vowels and repeated vowels mark the written kana; rhythm and pronunciation can differ by tradition.

You can simply read the meaning or sit quietly. No recitation is required. For a temple or shrine’s own recitation, follow that tradition’s published guidance.
