About this English rendering
This site’s English rendering of the Japanese meaning guide, aligned with this edition. It is separate from the source words for recitation and is not an official liturgy. Sacred sounds are explained where possible, not given speculative literal translations. Historical beliefs, royal authority, illness and protection claims belong to the text; they are not present-day judgments, medical advice or guarantees of results.
I have made a world-surpassing vow and will certainly reach the unsurpassed way.
If this vow is not fulfilled, I pledge not to accomplish perfect awakening.
Unless, throughout immeasurable kalpas, I become a great giver
and rescue all who are poor and suffering, I pledge not to accomplish perfect awakening.
When I attain Buddhahood, may my name resound beyond the ten directions;
if anywhere does not hear it, I pledge not to accomplish perfect awakening.
Free from craving, deeply and rightly mindful, cultivating pure conduct with pure wisdom,
I will aspire to the unsurpassed way and become a teacher of gods and people.
Through wondrous power I will emit great light, illuminating boundless lands,
removing the darkness of greed, anger, and ignorance, and rescuing widely from calamities and hardships.
I will open people’s eyes of wisdom and destroy this unseeing darkness,
closing the painful paths and opening the gateways to good realms.
Fulfilling merit, I will illuminate every direction with its radiance.
Even sun and moon will withdraw their combined brilliance, and heavenly light will disappear from view.
I will open the treasury of the Dharma for people and widely distribute the treasure of merit.
Always amid the multitude, I will teach with a lion’s roar.
Making offerings to every Buddha and cultivating many roots of virtue,
I will completely fulfill aspiration and wisdom, becoming a hero within the three realms.
As the Buddha’s unobstructed wisdom penetrates and illuminates everywhere,
may the power of my merit and wisdom equal this supremely honored one.
If this vow is fulfilled, may the immense universe respond and tremble,
and may the heavenly deities rain down rare and beautiful flowers.
Source text and reading aid
Roman letters are provided for every line of this source text.
How to use the Roman letters
Roman letters follow the kana displayed in this site’s Japanese reader; some readings are editorial additions documented on the Japanese page. These are a reading aid, not restored Sanskrit or a recording of a temple’s chanting. Historical spellings (such as wo, wi, we and ha used as a particle) are kept. Double vowels and repeated vowels mark the written kana; rhythm and pronunciation can differ by tradition.
You can simply read the meaning or sit quietly. No recitation is required. For a temple or shrine’s own recitation, follow that tradition’s published guidance.
