History and things to know
According to temple tradition, it is said to have been built by Prince Shōtoku; in Kōan 7 (1284) the jitō (local steward) 土肥元頼 welcomed Ikkō Shunshō Shōnin, rebuilt the temple and named it Renge-ji. In Genkō 3 (1333), Hōjō Nakatoki of the Rokuhara Tandai and more than 430 others took their own lives in the grounds, and the kakochō (death register) in which the head priest recorded their names is an Important Cultural Property.
