History and things to know
According to the official guide, it is said to have been founded in Tenchō 1 (824) by Kōbō Daishi, at the wish of Emperor Junna, as the jingūji (shrine temple) of Ōyamato Jinja. At its height it had forty-eight sub-temples, and through rise and decline it has kept the Dharma lamp burning. Many Buddhist statues and buildings that are Important Cultural Properties have come down, beginning with the bell-tower gate regarded as the oldest in Japan.
