History and things to know

The temple's engi says it was opened in Tenpyō Shōhō 8 by the Tang monk 虚滝 at the imperial request of Retired Emperor Shōmu and Empress Kōken, but its real beginning is thought to have been in Manju 3, when the holy man Myōzen enshrined a statue of Jūichimen Kannon. In Ten'ei 3 Kyōgen built an Amida hall and enshrined a statue of Amida Nyorai; after losing most of its halls in the fires of war of the Ōnin era, it was restored by Eikō Ajari and others. The present main hall was rebuilt in the Muromachi period and is an Important Cultural Property.
