History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, it was founded in Tenmu 2 (673) by the ajari 覚豪 as a temple for the prayers of Emperor Tenmu, and it is said to be the oldest temple in Senshū. The Tahōtō and the Kondō are said to have been built when Kōbō Daishi stayed here, and after wars it was restored by Toyotomi Hideyori in Keichō 7 (1602).
