History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was founded around 1281 to pray for the repose of Munemasa, the third son of Hōjō Tokiyori, after his death. At its height it had a full seven-hall compound and 11 sub-temples, and Song-style features can be seen in its bell-tower gate and main hall. The principal images were once lost to fire, and the present statues are described as works of the Nanboku-chō period.
