History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it began in the first year of Empress Suiko (593), when 大神君白堤, on imperial orders, enshrined Ōmononushi no Mikoto, and in ancient times it was called 春日率川坂岡社. It is said that in Yōrō 1 (717) Fujiwara no Fuhito enshrined Ōnamuchi no Mikoto and Sukunahikona no Mikoto together with him, and that in Jōgan 1 (859) the spirits of the enshrined kami were invited to the Ministry of the Imperial Household in Heian-kyō.
